More Funerary Art...

The hand with a finger pointing upward symbolizes that the soul has gone to the heavens.

The Rose symbolizes love. Used for children’s graves as a rose bud that has not opened with a broken stem. The more full the bloom the longer one lived.

The Rose also stands for sorrow.

the broken rose bud symbol is so sad.

I will have to look around better the next time I'm at an old cemetery. Not sure that I've seen the hand with the finger pointing up before. I know I wouldn't had known what it meant but I do now!

That's fascinating. Any more grave knowledge you can pass on would be of interest as I'm always photographing headstones and didn't know the significance of either of those.

Just read your previous funerary art post as well. I'm learning a lot - many thanks.

I have to go down to Boston sometime soon and get some photos from the old graveyards. There is one with a skeleton snuffing out the candle of life. The artwork is really very interesting.

Sweet poem on that last tombstone about the angel band.
