NH Barns

Went for a nice drive in the country with my friend Aliza this weekend. These are NH barns along the Connecticut River.

More Funerary Art...

The hand with a finger pointing upward symbolizes that the soul has gone to the heavens.

The Rose symbolizes love. Used for children’s graves as a rose bud that has not opened with a broken stem. The more full the bloom the longer one lived.

The Rose also stands for sorrow.

NH's Pink Lady Slipper (Cypripedium acaule)

The pink lady's slipper (Cypripedium acaule) was designated the official state wildflower of New Hampshire in 1991. A unique member of the orchid family, this showy flower is native to North America (also known as moccasin flower, or simply lady slipper).

The lady's slipper is protected in some areas - its numbers have been greatly reduced due to loss of habitat. Also, since the lady's slipper is one of the more eye-catching wildflowers of the northeast, transplanting attempts have taken a significant toll on their numbers (transplanting nearly always fails because the lady's slipper has a symbiotic relationship with a certain fungus in the forest).

A reminder to all forest visitors - tred lightly - take home only photos and memories - preserve the delicate ecology of our dwindling woods.

A couple of North Country Barns...

I 've been spending weekends in the north country of NH. My little camp needs some TLC. We have electricity there but no running water. I have to go down the road to get spring water. I love the barns I pass along the way. I try to make the "water run" early in the morning or closer to sunset. This way I have a better chance of seeing wildlife along the way. Wild turkey, fox, moose and deer are not uncommon and sometimes I see the occasional bear...

Granny Stalbird

"Granny" Stalbird, also known as Deborah Vicker, was only the second woman to settle in the town of Jefferson. She was a servant girl and cook arriving with Colonel Joseph Whipple in 1774.  She married Richard Stalbird and gave birth to five children. After she was widowed, she became the first female doctor in the area and was held in high esteem. Granny was known to have traveled on horseback with hood and long plaid coat and her medicine bag, healing those by drawing from her nursing training and her knowledge of Native American remedies.

One history book notes that some people in town thought Granny was witch for she used herbal remedies and befriended the local Native Americas. Back in the mid-1800's anyone with such knowledge was probably regarded by the locals as having unnatural knowledge of plants and herbs. It is also said that Granny made the first maple syrup in Jefferson.

Her family lived for four generations at the property now known as the Applebrook Bed & Breakfast.

The family owners of the Bed and Breakfast worked to have this historic marker placed. A celebration was held this week. Unfortunately, the B&B went under foreclosure auction this week.
