“I scream, you scream”- The Rural Scoop on homemade ice cream in North Country NH

Located on Main Street in Bethlehem, NH right next to the Colonial Theatre is Rennell’s ice cream. Family owned and operated, all Rennell's ice cream is homemade. They rotate about 12 flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt every week. You can find the traditional flavors such as vanilla and chocolate and other flavors that change daily and seasonally such as Almond Yippee, Raspberry Peach Melba, Pumpkin Pie and Eggnog. The inside has a mom and pop type feel with colorful walls, the décor is kitschy with moose memorabilia. They also offer café seating outdoors with a view of the Bethlehem Main Street. Rennell’s is open year round.

Located on Cottage Street in Littleton, NH in a mostly residential neighborhood is Bishop’s ice cream (founded in 1976) a destination for lovers of creamy homemade ice cream. This place is a cute little ice cream parlor decked out in green, pink, and burgundy with a display of vintage ice cream makers and milk bottles. Bishop’s also offers porch seating and picnic tables outside. You can find traditional flavors and some signature flavors such as Bishop's Bash and Grapenut ice cream. The servers are cheerful and appear to be high school aged. They are open from spring to Columbus Day weekend. Bishop’s was listed in Yankee Magazine as one of the five best ice cream stands in New England.

The Pink Shack Ice Cream stand in North Haverhill, NH is a little pink shed located next to a pink and mauve Victorian house, called Maple Cottage.  The Pink Shack offers homemade ice cream during the summer season and outdoor seating on picnic tables with views of farmland and mountains. We were greeted by an older Springer Spaniel who curled up at my feet under the picnic table. We tried some traditional flavors – Maple Walnut and Chocolate chip although I do love their homemade banana ice cream dipped in cherry hard dip. The flavors rotate.
